Workman Jumpsuit

Source: This look is one of my favorites. Before the whole workman jumpsuit became popular or trendy within the last year it was something I always sought out and loved when I shopped vintage. I’m showing it because it’s definitely a trend right now. The vintage ones are always very cool and unique.

Burlap Skirt

Source: "This look is just eye catching. This is one of those looks I feel is a fashion week look or a very cool event look. I love circle skirts and this is the second piece that I’m doing for Shirley and Alice. So it’s a piece that I designed. It’s a burlap skirt, very cool. I like to think of things you wouldn’t typically do. I first thought of grass but I didn’t know how that would work, so I said let’s just do burlap." Shoes: Prada, Stylist's own

Source: Here it’s paired with a vintage t shirt which is a staple item in your closet, and a vintage leather motorcycle jacket. This one is fitted. The trend right now is to have a motorcycle jacket and they’ve gone into more of the over sized looks but I feel like if you’re going to have one you need to have one that’s good for you and your body. That’s one of the key things: being comfortable in your clothes.

Menswear Inspired

Source: This look was menswear inspired. There were two things going on that I wanted to accomplish in this look. One was to show people you can reuse your pieces in your wardrobe. Personally I’m trying to condense the amount of pieces that I have in my wardrobe because I have too much stuff. And I find that when you have your staples and you buy things that are very specific to your wardrobe, you don’t spend as much time trying to get dressed in the morning. So that was one thing that I wanted to share, like how you can reuse the shirt and the shoes to give a completely different look and feel and still look great. No one would ever think you have on the same t shirt because the look is so completely different.

Source: It’s a pair of men’s tweed vintage pants rolled up at the bottom and with the brown belt. When I was a teenager and me and my friends used to go shopping one of my biggest pet peeves was not to wear brown and black together. Now I love it together. It’s so cool and most of the time the browns are washed out and a little messed up. The whole look is just very cool together. So I’ve started to mix them to a certain degree.

Source: The sweater coat has been a love of mine. I love 80s I love long ones, I love short ones. The sweater coat is just a great piece to have for fall because it takes the place of actually having a coat but you can layer it when it’s chillier and when it’s not so chilly. You can roll the sleeves up and still wear it just as an option of not having to wear a leather jacket. And it’s cozy.

Source: The hat is a vintage blue hat. I find that a lot of vintage hats are like church hats and what I’ve been doing lately is taking the church lady-ness off the hats. It might be like a few minor details that I leave on the hat or add a broach to spice it up a little bit and make it a bit more modern.

Cape Look

Photo: Abi Ishola, BCB

Source: I love capes and I love to layer so I always look for pieces that can be layered that are not like too bulky that you can put a leather jacket on or a denim jacket under and you’re warm but you still look great.

80s Era Dress

Source: This look is pretty much and 80s early 90s drop waist pleated dress that we put with vintage tie up booties. Which is very just simple and cool but the dress is very eye catching. This fits her very straight and very cool. I love dresses and that kind of the bulk of what we have at the store. It’s a great dress because you’ll always know you can just throw it on and wherever you go it’s cool.

Source: Again, I love pieces that you can layer. You can put anything on top of it. You can go as far as putting a fur jacket on top of it and it’ll still be very cool for whatever you need to do. The booties are vintage—Victorian style. I love them they are so cute. They are something that can literally look good with anything, pants, dresses skirts, anything.

Khalilah Beavers says she’s no expert at juggling all the things that make up her busy life.

Between styling NBA player Carmelo Anthony, running her Brooklyn based vintage boutique, being a wife, and mommy to her 5-year-old son, she still can’t pinpoint how she manages everything.

“I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know,” she says as she exhales. “It’s a lot, and more times than not it’s very overwhelming. But it’s rewarding at the same time. I think the biggest thing is having a team that’s there to support you.”

She credits her early grind in New York City as the best preparation for her busy career. When the Baltimore native moved to The Big Apple in 2002, her goal was to go to school for fashion merchandising. That never happened. Instead she took waitressing jobs and later became an assistant manager at Express. It was through the retail world she found her way into the world of styling.

“As I was working in retail I met other stylists. I started assisting them and that’s how my styling career came about.”

Her childhood love for vintage is what inspired her to open Shirley and Alice, the Bed Stuy based vintage, consignment, and indy designer boutique she named after her grandmothers who were both style enthusiasts and vintage lovers.

“When I was a little girl my mom would take me to the thrift store and I hated it. I used to hide under the racks. But as I got older, I began to appreciate the uniqueness of vintage and I started wearing it to school and especially when I moved here, and just being broke and not having money, but being inspired by New York, by the people my style started to change a little bit. I thought the easiest thing to do or the most cost effective thing to do is to shop vintage.”

It’s that humbleness that allows her to offer golden advice for those aspiring to open a store or fulfill any other dream:

“Put 100 percent into it. Whether you own a store or you’re working in a store, there’s always steps to where you want to be. You have to give it your all,” she said. “It’s very important that you learn and that you take from each experience. It may not be where you want to be but there’s a reason why you’re there.”
