When I first got the news that BeyondClassicallyBeautiful.com contributor, Latasha Henderson-Robinson was selected as one of the designers for the 15th season of Project Runway, I was so excited.

Not only is Latasha a talented designer and stylist, she’s also humble and one of the most hard working people I’ve encountered in the fashion industry.

With this season of the show still underway, I caught up with the budding star to find out what it was like being on show and what’s next for her brand, VonRay.

Being on Project Runway was soooooooo amazing but a lot of hard work!  I enjoyed meeting and working with the cast, I enjoyed working side by side with Tim Gunn, I learned a lot,I grew a lot and I’m just grateful to God for the opportunity to be apart of the Project Runway family. Did I mention that it is A LOT of hard work, lol.

Let’s talk about the auditioning process.  What did you have to do to be considered?

I actually auditioned last year and got the second callback, but didn’t get all the way through to the actual cast. Which last year was hard for me because one of my sisters had passed away from cancer the day before my audition. This year I went through the normal process that Project Runway advertises on television,I filled out the online application and got a callback and did my LIVE audition. I’m order to be considered you need a portfolio and apparel to show to the judges. It’s a lot of paperwork as well. I found out that I was apart of he cast a couple months later while I was styling the cast of Starz hit series “Power”. As soon as the shoot was over they I got a call and then a Skype that I was apart of the cast and I couldn’t stop praising God & crying.

Did you come in with any particular strategy of how you wanted to present your work and yourself as a designer?

During the audition: I am actually a super creative person when it comes to fashion show presentation and production. So my strategy was to show a mini snippet of what I do on my runway shows. So I had three models (2 females and 1 male model) and they wore boxes on their heads so that the judges would focus on the creativity of my apparel I designed and made. I also made sure that I had a cohesive color palette, season and story with my apparel.
On the show: I just wanted to enter the show as being myself (encouraging, hardworker, and showcase my street/urban aesthetic). I had no plans,I just wanted to remain focused and chill and show my skills.

In the past black people sometimes get a bad rap on reality television.  Did this make you nervous at all?  Do you feel you were able to represent yourself authentically?

In the past African-Americans have been known to be the dramatic personalities and drama all the time. This particular fact didn’t make me nervous, but it made me want let the world know that we as African-Americans are professional, calm, focused and very successful in Fashion. I was grateful to be able to represent myself authentically on the show.

What was your favorite challenge?

The “Unconventional Challenge” in which I was in Top 3 and “JustFab” Challenge.

What would you say is the most important thing you took away from the competition?

The most important thing I took away from the Competition was to stay true to “who you are” and “know who you are” (know your aesthetic & stay true)! I gained even more confidence and speed! I know that anything is possible and whatever I dream can come true!!

  1. So happy to see Tasha be picked as one of the designers on the show. She was always a talented ,driven and creative person, at a very young age she had vision ,tenacity and the guts to step out and make things happen. Sky is the limit for her…..Go Tasha

  2. You made the show fresh again, thanks for that but the big flash is you you inspired me to try my hand at making clothing for myself. I love watching you and I’m proud of you for never waving on your faith in God.
