Launched by multimedia journalist Abi Ishola in 2014, Beyond Classically Beautiful first began as a photo series designed to celebrate the beauty of Black women. Today, BeyondClassicallyBeautiful.com is a media destination that celebrates the diverse beauty of black women. We work to inspire, showcase, and uplift black women through beauty and style coverage focusing on the everyday woman. Our goal is to break down society’s narrow standards of beauty as a way to establish real beauty ideals. Our readers are bold, industrious, stylish, intelligent, and beautiful beyond categories. The website and brand were founded by Abi Ishola, a journalist and beauty enthusiast, who also serves as the Editor-in-Chief.
FROM PHOTO SERIES TO BEAUTY MOVEMENT
Beyond Classically Beautiful began as a photo series in response to a New York Times article that referred to Emmy Award winning actress, Viola Davis as “less classically beautiful” than lighter skinned black actresses.
As women from around the world responded to the project with great enthusiasm, several major media outlets from the United States, Africa, and Europe including ELLE.com, Pop Sugar, Fashion Bomb Daily, and FOX Philadelphia, featured Beyond Classically Beautiful with glowing reviews. The Huffington Post named the project one of the top 5 most uplifting fashion and beauty moments at the start of 2015.
