We are Delcia and Alia Johnson. We were Born in Miami, FL and raised in West Park, FL. We are aspiring identical twin models. For two years, our modeling journey has been a beautiful path. We collaborated with creative people who truly see a great potential in us. Our biggest goal or message is to represent for black models. Through our pictures we want to show that we can be high fashion and editorial and not just be categorized as just urban, and yet prove that we are talented too and have the potential of being great models! The industry is stuck on portraying the same looking models for years, like tall models. We are 5’7 which is short. The top agencies require you to be at least 5’9 and taller. They should equally represent all shades of beauty and different heights of models that have great talent. Most importantly, we hope to inspire black girls to embrace their natural hair and to follow their passion.
How do you defy society’s typical beauty standards?
We both can agree that society’s beauty standards focus on a certain image; that image on having a slim body, pretty straight hair, lighter complexion and overall a flawless appearance. Our ideal of beauty is being a good person on the inside with good values and a good purpose in the world. Also, we manage to just stay as humble and true to ourselves as possible. We prefer to be original and to not follow the crowd because being different is just fine.
Tell us about the “Froshakermovement”
We created FroShakerMovement on November 15, 2015. It’s a page on Instagram dedicated to natural hair people; we showcase videos of FroShakers, shaking their natural hair!! The videos are all about having fun and embracing your natural hair!! For more details on participating as a FroShaker, you can follow the official instagram page @froshakermovement.
How have you come to recognize your beauty and your power over the years?
Our method on how we come to recognize our beauty and power is through creativity. With modeling we sometimes have the freedom to be creative enough to come up with the concept and styling of the different photo shoots, which we find to be important in expressing our ideas and to see them put to reality. Also, we are creative when it comes to our dance movements; we received comments that our dancing is interesting and unique.
What inspired you to pursue modeling as a pair rather than individually?
Working as a pair is more marketable and honestly our best pictures are always together!
What makes you feel most beautiful?
Alia: Being natural! Makeup free and rocking my natural hair.
Delcia: When I’m smiling or when I see others smiling.
Would you say you’re 100% comfortable in your own skin at this point in your life? How so or why not?
We both agree that we are not 100% comfortable in our own skin at this point because we still have our own insecurities. For example, we chose not to expose too much skin while modeling. However, we can proudly say that we do appreciate and love our melanin skin; there are some women who don’t love their dark complexion, to the point of going to the extreme to lighten their complexion. This is due to society not showing, teaching and embracing the fact that dark skin is beautiful. We can conclude that we are still growing, evolving, learning and experiencing within ourselves.
