Beauty Of The Day: Latasha Henderson-Robinson

Introduce yourself

My name is Latasha Henderson-Robinson.  In a few words I would describe myself as “Loving, Persistent, Caring, and Straight-Forward. I am a published stylist, hardworking designer, I am also a Writer,Creative Director, and full-time Lover of God and people.  I am currently based in New Jersey and relocating to Savannah,GA in March.

How is your work as a stylist/fashion designer unique?

My work as a fashion stylist and designer is unique because my husband and I apply love to every piece we make, every sketch we sketch and every client we touch. This is not only a gift for me, but its my passion.  My signature style of “custom” is applied to every client that I style.  I try to leave them with a custom piece to remember me by and of all the pieces I design I try to keep it simple with a slice of edge.  You can literally feel the passion in the piece and in our work.

Latasha5How do you defy society’s typical beauty standards?

In my opinion, society’s typical beauty standards are very fenced and boxed up!  Even in my childhood, I watched the “typical beauty” on television and they all looked the same no matter who they were.  It was almost like an abomination to have a variety in skin complexion and size shown on mainstream media. I resist the typical beauty standard, because I am bold and confident in myself.  I am a confident plus size female, so being plus size alone doesn’t have a glamorous platform in most cases.  My personality outshines my size.  I try different looks and hairstyles to show my creativity and trust me, it’s all against the grain of “typical beauty standards.”

How have you come to recognize your beauty and power over the years?

When growing up, my mother always spoke of me being beautiful, but when I would attend school and want to be on dance line or audition for a school auxiliary, I would be turned down because of my size.  I would go home and ask my mother why people say being plus size was bad and why it affects a person utilizing their talent.  My mother educated me on loving myself regardless of how society spoke against who I was.

I began recognizing my beauty and power some years back when I would be a part of creative teams and I would coordinate successful projects and no one would call me “Big Tasha” or say “the big girl.”  People were giving be credit for my work and stating my full name respectfully and describing me as “the creative girl” or “the girl with the hair,” (laughs).  It took a long while, but God gave me the strength until my power was revealed to me fully.

What inspires your style?

What inspires my style is everyday situations.  I also enjoy art and that influences my style because I like to view my personal style as “characters.”  My husband is an illustrator and his characters also inspire me.  I’m inspired by color combining and designs as well.  If I can’t make it, I can style it.

What are your go-to beauty products?

I am a tomboy who finally climbed up the beauty ladder (laughs).  I love, love, love Kat Von D Lipsticks, HD Concealer, and any product from Shea Moisture (including the lotions).  I live by natural coconut oil as a moisturizer too.

What makes you feel most beautiful?

What makes me feel the most beautiful is when other women or men tell me how beautiful my personality is or how they like to be around my positive spirit. My husband also tells me I’m so beautiful even when I’m not feeling my best. And the ultimate beauty booster is when I style someone and their reaction is a shocker.  That warms my heart to see people feel good about themselves.

Would you say you’re 100% comfortable in your own skin at this point in your life?

I’m a realist, so I would have to say that I’m about 90 percent comfortable in my own skin at this point in my life. I am working on my weight.  I lost 17lbs so far.  I want a healthy lifestyle. I want to be a thicker but healthy girl.  I’m very confident, but just working on my weight.
