Konjac Sponge by Daily Concepts

This Konjac sponge by Daily Concepts is one of those little things that I’m excited to have. It’s a sponge. It’s from Japan. It’s a sea-based sponge so it’s a natural product. We have three: the pure, and then we have one infused with charcoal which is a really nice purifying ingredient, and one is infused with turmeric which is a really nice natural brightening ingredient. It’s natural, so this time of the year it’s just good to get rid of that dry dead skin that we have on the top of our skin. You can use it dry but it’s really nice with a gentle cleanser. $18

Kale + Spinach Green Tea Moisture Cream by Youth To The People

Another product that I’m loving right now is this Youth To The People Kale and Spinach Green Tea Moisture Cream. Kale, spinach, and green tea are all super antioxidant rich. It’s really nice at kind of holding moisture in your skin. It’s a really nice rich, creamy facial moisturizer, also really nice for this time of the year. Then it’s a cool up-and-coming brand. I think that’s something that ultimately all these brands have in common. Just kind of being emerging brands with something unique that adds something different to our shelves. $48

Age Control Even Tone Moisturizer by Ahava

Ahava is from Israel and the older products are infused with deep sea, dead sea minerals or water. So there are a lot of even tone benefits to it. Their hydrating products are awesome. One of the products from the line that I really love is their sleeping mask. It’s called Age Control Even Tone. Because a lot of their products are really rich they market them as anti aging because they’re great for reducing fine lines. But I like them because the dead sea minerals also help to even skin tone which is always something that I’m struggling with. These mineral rich products are really great for that. Ahava is a really great line. It’s one of those lines that does what it says. $62

Calendula Eye Balm by Indie Lee

Idie Lee is a natural brand. This eye cream is calendula based so it’s really hydrating and nice for fine lines. It’s great to put in on at nighttime. You’ll definitely feel the difference in the morning. It’s super rich but also has a heavy calendula content so it’s really nice for brightening and that reflection of light versus darkness. $42

Desiree Verdejo

The past 6 months have been quite an experience for Desiree Verdejo. Last July the former lawyer officially opened Vivrant Beauty, a Harlem based boutique style beauty shop that carries luxury brands that cater to women of color. Since then she’s been featured in the New York Times, Essence.com, and several other publications.   She’s also seen her customer base evolve in such a short span of time.

“I think we’ve been well received, people have been interested in coming in, people have returned consistently, people have felt comfortable enough spreading the word to their friends or in different publications so I can’t ask for better reception,” said the Harlem native.

Verdejo, who gave up her law career to start the venture, never worked in the beauty business prior to opening her store. But she did have limitless experience as a Black female consumer with few options to shop for products: either inching through cluttered beauty supply stores in Harlem or searching for guidance in larger retail shops. Vivrant beauty is her answer to both problems.

“I think this was the thing that was missing in Harlem in terms of beauty boutiques that consider women of color,” she said. “On our staff we have and esthetician, we have a makeup artist. The goal is really having an environment where there are products but also there’s some information.”

Besides its bright and open minimalist space, one of the things that makes Vivrant Beauty so special is how wonderfully curated the products are. We asked Desiree Verdejo to recommend 5 must-have beauty products to keep your skin radiant this season. Click through the gallery above to see what made the list.
