Beauty Of The Day: Nyla

Introduce yourself.

My name is Nyla.  I am a body-positive, personal-style blogger from Houston, Texas. I’m also a full-time grad student. You can find me over on The blog began as a much-needed distraction from school, but it’s turned into so much more. I didn’t realize how much I needed blogging as an outlet.

How do you defy society’s typical beauty standards?

I think the easier question is how do I NOT defy typical standards. I am short. I am black. I am fat. I have big feet. My nose is wide and flat. My hair is kinky and graying at a rapid pace. I’m team #lotsofwaist.  Some might see this list and wonder why I would point out all of my flaws. I see this list and wonder why I used to think they were flaws at all.

How have you come to recognize your beauty and power over the years?

I gave myself permission to bask in my own beauty. I gave myself permission to understand that beauty was more than my nose, my butt, my hips, my waist, my tummy, my eyes, or my hair. That it was all these things and more. That it was my gift for empathy, my knack for being right (lol), my sense of humor, and my wacky view of the world.  These all give me power.

What inspires your style?

I’ve realized that taking fashion risks has helped me really identify my personal style. I’m inspired by people not afraid to try new things, or express themselves via their personal style.

What makes you feel most beautiful?

A good night’s rest.

Would you say you’re 100% comfortable in your own skin at this point in your life?

Definitely not, and I am okay with that.  Change is uncomfortable, and I realize that it is also inevitable. I’ve reached a point in my life where I am no longer fighting it.

  1. You are truly an inspiration and becoming an icon. Personally, I think you overstate your “flaws”. In my mind, there are no flaws just facts. Keep brining your style, attitude and grace my dear.

  2. Love the q&a and you are not the f-word, you’re beautiful and send me some of your curves. Glad that you’re not 100% comfortable because when younget too comfortable people tend to lose sight.
