Editor’s Note: What Do You Do To Remind Yourself Of Your Own Greatness?

I have this thing about the word greatness. It’s one of my favorite words, mainly because of how my father translated my name, Abimbola.  Most Yoruba people translate it as “Born with wealth” or “Born wealthy.” My told me it means “born with greatness.” Even on the days I hated my name growing up, the meaning always gave me hope. It made me feel special. It was a reminder that no matter what my obstacles are, I have the innate ability to overcome. It’s like a reminder of the power that we all have the ability to tap into.  I believe we should all be aware of what makes us great.

It’s no secret that we live in a society that teaches us that being great and actually having the nerve to talk about it stems from arrogance.  But how do we survive without actually stepping back to bask in our power, strength, and ability to create change, even if it’s merely reflected in our own lives?

What do you do to remind yourself of your greatness?  If you don’t have a specific ritual and you’re looking for inspiration, here’s what I do:

1. Listen to songs that remind me of the greatness of God and mankind—this stems from gospel music to braggadocios rap songs (Nas, Kendrick, Biggie, and sometimes Jay Z). Isn’t it interesting how the number one quality a rap artist needs to succeed is the ability to discuss his/her greatness? What if we all had that written out on our job descriptions and life goals? I think we should.  Find your greatness tune and keep it on replay!

2. Meditate and pray. When I take time to connect to my higher power, I’m instantly reminded that worry and struggle should never take up a permanent space in my mind or soul. I have a way of holding on to things and agonizing over them.  I’ve learned that it’s essential a self destructive process that leads to poor health, agitation, and worry.  I’m learning everyday to live life freely. Prayer and meditation are always the best reminders for me.

3. I talk to my mother. Someone once told my sister that my mother is the closest thing to God that she and I have here on earth. What a powerful statement. It’s the absolute truth. My and I don’t have a perfect relationship, but she’s the kind of woman that will pray for you more than you pray for yourself. Find that person in your life and recognize their importance in your world. Praise them and appreciate them.

4. Have someone take photos of your. Don’t be afraid to document your greatness in that way. Beyond the clothes, jewelry, and makeup, look at your image and bask in your own glory. Be FULL of yourself even on days when you’re not feeling so full.

5. I read, watch, or gaze at the work of artists and creators who embrace and openly display their own greatness.

6. I gaze at my daughter. The ability to bring children into the world is one of the greatest miracles one can witness. I’m reminded of this when I take the time to look deep into my daughter’s eyes.If you don’t have children, that same wonder lies in your ability to heal your body, heal your own mind, or your drive to simply practice self-care.

7. I remember my past accomplishments, and even the mistakes I’ve learned from and corrected.

8. I pay attention to how people react to me. There’s no better feeling than knowing someone else appreciates the things you do, what you represent, or merely your presence. At times, a person doesn’t have to say a word. You can see the love in their eyes. That’s truly a gift.
