It felt really good when I got my contract with Maybelline. I was kind of in shock because there’s not really a lot of people that I look up to in the makeup world. There’s Lupita but that’s about one in a million. So to be the kind of girl that can represent so many women with short hair and dark skinned women, I was in tears and I was amazed. It was also kind of like a little bit of pressure because it’s such a high responsibility. Ever since I became a Maybelline girl, a lot of young girls, they’re coming up to me and they’re asking me, ‘oh my God, now I feel beautiful. How do you deal with people making fun of you for your dark skin and your short hair?’ It took a lot of years to get here. A lot of tears, but I pulled through and now I’m here.
