Young Muslim girls who dress modestly now have a doll that mirrors them more than the average doll. Mattel announced the release of its first hijab wearing Barbie modeled after fencing Olympian, Ibtihaj Mohammad for its Sheroes collection. “Perfect hijab moment right here, this is amazing,” she said holding the doll for the first time at the Glamour Women of the Year Summit.
The hijab isn’t the only thing that makes Mohammad’s doll tailored to her likeness. She explained that she had a lot of say in how her doll would be shaped as well. “Growing up I was always told that my legs were big,” the New Jersey native told ESPN. “(I)t was important to me that my doll has an athletic build and toned legs, which I have. Those legs helped me win my medal at the Olympic Games.”
Before making history with Mattel, Mohammad became the first Muslim American woman to take home an Olympic title after winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Games in Rio De Janeiro.
