Introduce yourself.
I’m Psyche Southwell, the creator and editor of Economy of Style, a notebook on evolving trends, fashion sense and cents. I was born and raised in St. Kitts, but I now live in St. Louis.
You’re a social science researcher and educator. What inspired you to start a fashion blog?
I started blogging because it was an activity that allowed me to combine my interests in economics, fashion, and artistic expression. My continued passion for those things keeps me motivated. I think my open discussions about prices and affordable shopping appeals to people with similar interests.
Describe your style and what inspires you to wear what you wear.
I’m drawn to very classic and timeless pieces. I have fun by playing with bright colors and sharp silhouettes.
What are your go-to style pieces, accessories, and beauty items?
Pointed toe pumps. They accent my style so well with the added bonus of elongating my shorter frame.
A-line dresses. As a woman with a pear shape, this silhouette is always magically flattering.
Bright colors. I believe that bright colors best suit my energetic and vibrant way of living.
Bold prints. I’m an island girl, and global prints in particular excite all my style sensibilities.
That perfect foundation match. Right now, I’m loving the Fenty Beauty foundation in 390.
A bold lipstick. Mac “Heroine” and Mac “Carmine Rouge” are favorites.
How do you defy society’s typical beauty standards?
I begin from the notion that there are multiple ways to see beauty. I also acknowledge that standards are never static, and they’re always shifting.
